Walk out into your backyard right now and try to dig a hole. Water freezes when the temperature drops
below a certain point even if that water is embedded in the soil. This is called the frost line…just like the
frozen tundra. As temperatures stay
below 32 degrees that frost line moves down and down until it reaches
underground pipes.
That frozen ground adds pressure to anything below it
including the underground service lines that pump water throughout the many
communities in Far Western Suburban Chicagoland. Most of the water mains are a minimum of 5
feet underground. In the winter, the
downward force on a pipe is 400 pounds per foot or more!
